"Manosque,
Tour du Mont d'or, in Luberon Natural Park"
|
Between
the Alps and the Vaucluse plain, the rounded silhouette
of the Luberon stretches out, watching over Provence.
It owes its uniqueness to the mild climate, the harmonious
landscapes and the wealth of flora to be found.
Here, each stone wall reveals Man's longstanding
attachment to this land.In Neolithic times people were already
living sheltered underneath its white rocks. Then warriors,
traders and travellers used the Domitian Way, the most ancient
roadway in France, which still crosses the Luberon. Meanwhile
the farming community was growing in diversity : orchards,
cereals and sheep.
In 1977 the Luberon Regional Natural Park was instituted
to protect and promote this land where life is sweet, a
territory covering some 1,650 km2. The work it carries out
is in harmony with local traditions and places : re-opening
old paths, renovating dwellings, protecting endangered species,
etc.
