The
Verdon Regional Natural Park was established in
1997, to protect and promote 1,800 km2 along the
banks of the river, from St André-les-Alpes
to Vinon-sur-Verdon.
It is a land of contrasts, split between the
"départements" of Alpes de Haute-Provence
and Var. The calm horizontality of Valensole plateau
gives way to the abrupt verticality of the famous
Gorges, followed by the peaceful vistas over the
lakes of Castillon, Sainte-Croix-de-Verdon, Esparron
and Quinson, where the Alps begin.
The aims of the initial operations engaged by the
Verdon Regional Park are to preserve and revitalise
the area : Verdon water management scheme, inventory
and restoration of architectural heritage, replanting
of olive groves, etc.
