The classified
sites in the Alpes de Haute-Provence are true natural
monuments. Visitors are either astonished by their
majestic atmosphere, or enchanted by their intimate
aspect.
In the Grand Canyon of the Verdon Gorges, limestone
cliffs 300 m high tower over the emerald green torrent.
At Annot, enormous sandstone blocks have created
a titanic landscape in the midst of chestnut trees
several centuries old.
The "Penitents" at Mées are gigantic
masses of eroded conglomerate keeping watch over
the Durance valley.
Lance waterfall near Colmars-les-Alpes sings out
a melodious tune all year long. In the Ubaye, the
shores of Lauzet lake resemble a Romantic painting,
while the cypresses at St-Michel-l'Observatoire
evoke the landscapes of Ancient Greece.
