Our "département" is the meeting place between
the Alps and Provence, and has inspired writers and artists
down the centuries, struck by the richness of its landscapes.
Jean Giono, the "stationary traveller" born in
Manosque, used the area as the setting for his most important
novels such as "Colline" and "Hussard sur le
toit". Maria Borrely and Jean Proal described the tough
daily lives of people living on the plateaux bordering the Asse
or the region of Seyne-les-Alpes. Alexandra David Néel,
the formidable explorer of Tibet, lived in Digne-les-Bains for
the last 40 years of her life.
Today still, many writers live in our "département"
: Pierre Magnan, René Frégni, etc. Their rich
colourful language has all the hallmarks of the medieval troubadours
such as Albertet of Sisteron. Alpes de Haute-Provence is a southern
land flooded with light that has inspired many painters, including
some of the greatest from Turner to Monticelli, as well as the
19th century Provençal school with Etienne Martin and
Jean Caire.
At the dawn of the 21st century, painters such as Serge Fiorio,
Luc Gerber and Pierre Umbert are renewing pictorial art. Meanwhile,
many scientists and philosophers come here to unwind, strolling
along the paths where figures such as Pierre Gassendi and Alphonse
Beau de Rochas once walked.
